From the ninth century the Holy Mountain has been a center of monasticism, where luminaries, including Sts Gregory Palamas, Kosmas Aitolos, Paisios, Porphyrios, and Joseph the Hesychast, labored in prayer. Today Athos is home to over 1800 monks.
