This calendar celebrates the Christian heritage of Roman Gaul, alive today in modern France. Christianity took root in France thanks to 2nd c martyrs and the pastoral work of early Church Fathers such as St Irenaeus of Lyon, St Hilary of Poitiers, St Gregory of Tours, and St John Cassian. Already in these early years, France was entrusted with the relics of such beloved saints as Mary Magdalene, Lazarus, his sister Martha, and Anthony the Great. Important monastic communities were established in Tours, Cluny, and the island of Lerins. The tradition continues today with 28 Orthodox Christian monasteries and sketes of various traditions worshipping throughout France.
