"This comprehensive study of Christian Fasting does not attempt merely to explain what it is and why and how it is practiced, but seeks also to hopefully cultivate the motivation and the encouragement of the faithful of good will to undertake a serious restoration of Christian Fasting in their daily personal life, which is, of course, inseparable from the corporate ecclesial life of the Orthodox Church as a whole.
It is the purpose of this study to trace the historical and theological tradition of Fasting through its various stages, and to show how this tradition has come to be understood and practiced in the ongoing life of the Orthodox Church through the centuries and up to the present time."
