Christmas Gift Guide: For the Theologian

Be they priests, seminarians, or just lovers of theology--let's face it, they're hard to buy for. Chances are, if you know someone like this, their bookshelves are already overflowing.

And yet, there's still so much to learn. Let us help you find that perfect gift for the theologian in your life.

The Experience of God series, Dumitru Staniloae

No theologian's bookshelf is complete without this classic series from Romanian theologian Fr. Dumitru Staniloae. (Keep an eye on it, too--we'll be putting in on sale for Cyber Monday.)

The Holy Trinity: In the Beginning There was Love

Another classic from Staniloae, this slim but potent volume answers a vital question: what role does the love of the Trinity play in our everyday lives?

Economia and Eschatology

This title would make a great gift for the scholarly parish priest in your life. It's one of the only works written in the English language about the Prothesis Rite (the service the priest performs before the start of the liturgy).

The Art of Seeing: Paradox and Perception in Orthodox Iconography

Penned by Holy Cross's own Scholar-in-Residence Fr. Maximos Constas, this book is part theology, part iconology, and part art history. Fr. Maximos examines the theology of iconography eloquently and thoroughly. Filled with beautiful full-color photos, this book would make an excellent gift for the iconographer, theologian, or anyone in your life.

The Cross Stands while the World Turns

This recent work of Fr. John Behr's would make a handsome gift for any aspiring theologian. Behr's collection of homilies also serve as an excellent resource for any priest, be he newly-ordained or recently retired.

Becoming Human: Meditations on Christian Anthropology in Word and Image

Vividly illustrated and bound in attractive hardcover, this title of Behr's examines not only what it means to be Christian, but to be human. (It's also compact, so it would make a great stocking stuffer.)

The Inner Kingdom

Sure--like many Orthodox Christians, your theologian has read both The Orthodox Church and The Orthodox Way. But has she read Met. Kallistos' conversion story? This title includes a moving account of Met. Kallistos' discovery of the Orthodox Church, as well as an exploration of Orthodox spirituality.

We hope you've enjoyed these ideas from our staff. If you still haven't found that perfect item, don't despair--any of our many CDs, prayerbooks, or apparel items will do nicely. And you can always give us a call at 1 (800) 245-0599. We're happy to help.
